API 15HR vs 15LR vs 15S: What Buyers Spec Before RFQ

API 15HR vs 15LR vs 15S: What Buyers Spec Before RFQ

API 15HR, API Spec 15LR and API Spec 15S name three different construction families buyers often mix on one RFQ line: high-pressure fiberglass, low-pressure fiberglass line pipe, and onshore spoolable composite / RTP. Freeze the Spec family before you quote.

IFGS sources GRE/FRP stick tubulars and spoolable RTP from licensed partner factories in China and worldwide and handles spec confirmation, procurement and pre-shipment QC. IFGS has no factory of its own; it connects buyers to licensed partner factories in China and worldwide. This buyer RFQ selector is for anyone searching api 15hr, api 15lr, api 15s or api rp 15s who needs a quotable enquiry without mixing stick GRE with spoolable RTP. Start from IFGS products. No API monogram or certification is claimed here.

Crisp map: 15HR ≠ 15LR ≠ 15S

Keep the three letters apart before you compare bids:

  • API Spec 15HR — high-pressure fiberglass. Buyers often cite it for GRE tubing or high-pressure fiberglass line-pipe contexts. Rigid thermoset stick construction with threaded or jointed ends — not a reel.
  • API Spec 15LR — low-pressure fiberglass line pipe. Same rigid fiberglass / GRE-FRP stick family as 15HR, different pressure-band framing many end users cite for gathering, produced-water or utility transfer.
  • API Spec 15S — onshore spoolable reinforced plastic line pipe (RTP / LLRTP). Thermoplastic liner, reinforcement layers and jacket on reels with end fittings — never stick GRE.

15HR ≠ 15LR ≠ 15S. Pairwise background (link, don’t rehash): API 15HR vs API 15LR. Product-noun RFQs live at the GRE pipe buyers guide, GRE tubing buyers guide, RTP pipe buyers guide and FRP pipe buyers guide.

Short clarifier: 15S ≠ 17J

API Spec 15S is onshore spoolable RTP. API Spec 17J addresses unbonded flexible pipe — a different construction family. Do not paste a 17J label onto a 15S reel RFQ, or the reverse. One-page contrast: API 15S vs API 17J. Never call GRE tubing or GRE line pipe API 15S.

Selector matrix — API 15HR vs 15LR vs 15S by product family, supply format and what buyers must confirm before RFQ
Product family, supply format and what the buyer must confirm. Qualitative only, no numbers.
  • API 15HR (high-pressure fiberglass). Typical product family: GRE tubing or high-pressure fiberglass stick line pipe. Supply format: rigid sticks with threads, couplings or joint families. Confirm service/fluid, size basis, pressure-temperature, joints/ends and documents framed to the offered construction. Common mix-up: writing “API 15” with no letter, or labeling spoolable RTP as 15HR.
  • API 15LR (low-pressure fiberglass line pipe). Typical product family: rigid GRE/FRP line pipe for lower-pressure gathering, produced-water or industrial transfer. Supply format: stick pipe with a joint family. Confirm resin system where relevant, size basis, pressure-temperature, joints and documents. Common mix-up: treating 15LR as a flexible or spoolable path.
  • API 15S (spoolable RTP). Typical product family: onshore reinforced thermoplastic / spoolable composite line pipe. Supply format: reels with end fittings. Confirm construction, size basis, pressure-temperature, reel length, end fittings and documents. Common mix-up: calling GRE stick pipe “15S” or mixing 15S with 17J unbonded flexible.

When the RFQ still has to pick a material class first, use the non-metallic pipe selector (GRE vs FRP vs RTP). Geography-only background for spoolable tenders: why Iraqi oilfields favor API 15S RTP — link it; this page does not rehash the case.

How to pick which Spec language for the RFQ

  1. Stick GRE/FRP vs spoolable RTP. Fixed-length sticks and joint make-up → 15HR or 15LR framing. Reels, continuous length and end fittings → 15S. Do not mix families on one RFQ line.
  2. HP vs LP framing (stick only). If the tender or end user cites high-pressure fiberglass documents, name API Spec 15HR. If it cites low-pressure fiberglass line pipe, name API Spec 15LR. Ask the supplier for documents for the offered construction — a Spec number alone is not certification.
  3. Spoolable only. Name API Spec 15S when that is the tender frame. Qualify the plant separately with the RTP pipe manufacturers qualification guide.
  4. Documents to request. Drawing, datasheet, joint or end-fitting information, test and inspection records, and the exact Spec edition your end user cites. Phrase it as “buyers/end users may require documents framed to API Spec …; ask the supplier for documents for the offered construction.”

Live product entry points when you already know the family: API 15HR GRE Tubing, API 15LR GRE Tubing, GRE Tubing, and Onshore API 15S RTP Pipe. Catalogue figures on those pages are references to confirm against the offered drawing — this guide does not repeat them as ratings.

RFQ field checklist

  1. Service / fluid: gathering, injection, well/tubing duty, produced water, industrial or utility; include known chemistry, gas, solids and additives.
  2. Construction family: GRE stick (15HR or 15LR framing) vs RTP spoolable (15S). One family per line item.
  3. Size basis: say whether you mean OD, ID or nominal size, and request dimensions with tolerances on one drawing.
  4. Operating and design pressure-temperature: internal (and external / differential if relevant), design or test basis, units.
  5. Joints / ends: threads, couplings or joint family for stick GRE/FRP; end fittings for spoolable RTP — or ask the factory to propose a matched set.
  6. Length / quantity: total route or installed length, piece length or reel preference, spares.
  7. Destination and delivery window. Shipped from the licensed partner factory selected for your order.
  8. Documents required: drawing, datasheet, joint/end-fitting information, test and inspection records. Name any API Spec your end user cites (15HR, 15LR or 15S — never mix).

If Spec family, size basis or pressure-temperature is blank, quotes will not line up. Mark unknowns “Not sure yet” and ask the factory to confirm.

How IFGS works on this order

IFGS is a sourcing and QC partner: it connects buyers to licensed partner factories in China and worldwide and handles spec confirmation, procurement and pre-shipment QC. Lock the Spec family (15HR, 15LR or 15S), service and joints here, then confirm documents against the drawing. IFGS has no factory of its own and does not claim a monogram, and we quote no rating the catalog does not print as a confirmed datasheet. Browse IFGS products.

FAQ

What is API 15HR?

API Spec 15HR is the specification titled High Pressure Fiberglass Line Pipe. Buyers and end users may require documents framed to API Spec 15HR for high-pressure fiberglass tubing or line-pipe contexts. Ask the supplier for documents for the offered construction, size basis and joints. A Spec number alone is not certification, and this page claims no IFGS monogram or conformance.

API 15HR vs API 15LR: what’s the difference?

Both address rigid fiberglass (GRE/FRP) construction. 15HR is the high-pressure fiberglass framing many end users cite; 15LR is the low-pressure fiberglass line-pipe framing. Neither is spoolable RTP. Detail: API 15HR vs API 15LR.

Is API 15S the same as GRE pipe?

No. API Spec 15S is spoolable reinforced plastic line pipe (RTP). GRE pipe and GRE tubing are rigid thermoset stick products usually discussed with 15HR or 15LR language — never label GRE as 15S. See the RTP pipe buyers guide and the GRE pipe buyers guide.
