Fiberglass Underground Storage Tanks: What Buyers Spec Before RFQ

Fiberglass Underground Storage Tanks: What Buyers Spec Before RFQ

When buyers search fiberglass underground tanks for petroleum or related fuel storage, they need a clear RFQ map — single vs double wall, capacity language, openings, burial/backfill notes, and which UL scope language to cite — before quotes diverge.

IFGS is a sourcing and QC partner. We connect buyers to licensed partner factories in China and worldwide, clarify RFQ fields, confirm them against factory data sheets, compare quotes and run or coordinate pre-shipment QC. IFGS does not own a factory and is not a tank certificate holder under UL scopes; ask the producer for the current certificate holder name when a UL scope is named.

What “fiberglass underground storage tank” usually means

In a fuel / UST RFQ, fiberglass underground tanks (also FRP or GRE composite underground tanks, or a fiberglass UST) usually mean a thermoset composite shell designed for burial and petroleum or related fuel storage — not an aboveground steel path. Freeze one product description per comparable quote line when FRP underground storage tanks or GRE FRP underground tank language appears on the same enquiry.

Aboveground steel tank RFQs commonly sit under different documents (for example UL 142 scope language). Soft-touch only: what is UL 142 and how many UL tanks standards. This article owns the buyer RFQ map for fiberglass underground storage tanks, not a UL 142 deep dive.

Spec freeze fields for fiberglass underground tanks

Quotes diverge when one bidder answers single wall and another answers double wall, or when capacity and opening language is left open. Freeze the fields below before you compare prices. Confirm nominal capacity, diameter/length and openings on the factory data sheet — do not treat invented catalog liters or gallons as IFGS standards.

FieldWhat to freezeRFQ note
Duty / fluidPetroleum or related fuel; temperature and fluid notes as namedOne duty per comparable line; match factory data sheet language.
Single vs double wallSingle-wall or double-wall fiberglass UST (name one)Double wall usually needs interstitial monitoring language.
Nominal capacity languageCapacity as the project names it (units as stated)Confirm on the factory data sheet. No invented IFGS liter/gallon catalog.
Diameter / length / footprintShell OD, length or footprint as the drawing labels itConfirm how the factory drawing names each dimension.
Manways / openingsManway count/size language; other required openingsList openings explicitly so quotes share the same bill.
FittingsNozzle / fitting schedule (size, rating, facing as named)Freeze against the factory drawing; avoid vague “standard fittings”.
Interstitial monitoring (double wall)Monitoring method language the end user requiresRequired when double wall is named; omit only for single wall.
Burial / backfill / traffic loadBurial depth, backfill type, traffic / surcharge notes if anyPut site notes on the RFQ, not in side email.
DocumentsFactory data sheet, drawing, ITP, shipping / handlingName the document set before award; align marking vs PO.
DestinationDestination, Incoterm and packing / handlingInclude cradle / wrap expectations when the project names them.

UL language map (scope only — cite, don’t rehash)

When the end user names a UL scope, cite it on the RFQ — then ask the producer for the current listing or certificate holder name. IFGS is not a tank certificate holder under UL scopes and does not claim certificate-holder status unless a real certificate for that order is in hand; name the certificate holder, not IFGS.

  • UL 1316 — scope language commonly associated with underground fiberglass petroleum tanks. Depth: what is UL 1316.
  • UL 58 — related steel underground tank scope language. Depth: what is UL 58.
  • UL 1746 — related external corrosion protection scope for underground tanks. Depth: what is UL 1746.
  • Three-way compare — UL 58 vs UL 1316 vs UL 1746; this RFQ page does not redo that essay.

Never paste a UL number onto a quote line without matching factory certificate scope. Never treat “UL 1316 underground tank” wording alone as proof that a given shell is listed.

How IFGS works on a fiberglass petroleum storage tank RFQ

IFGS clarifies the RFQ fields above against the enquiry and the factory data sheet, sources from a licensed partner factory in China or worldwide that can meet the stated scope, compares quotes on matched fields, agrees the ITP, and runs or coordinates pre-shipment QC. IFGS does not run a plant or lab, does not claim own production volume, and is not a tank certificate holder under UL scopes.

Producer qualification habits are similar in spirit to the buyer checklist for qualifying a fiberglass pipe producer (that page owns pipe checks; this page owns fiberglass UST RFQ fields). For inspection rhythm, see the fiberglass pipe pre-shipment inspection checklist and adapt fields to the tank ITP. See products and about IFGS.

RFQ checklist for fiberglass underground tanks

Copy into the enquiry:

  • Duty / fluid — petroleum or related fuel; temperature and fluid notes as named
  • Wall type — single wall or double wall (one per comparable line)
  • Capacity language — nominal capacity as named; confirm on factory data sheet (no invented IFGS catalog liters/gallons)
  • Diameter / length / footprint — as the factory drawing labels them
  • Manways / openings / fittings — openings bill and nozzle schedule as named
  • Interstitial monitoring — required language when double wall is frozen
  • Burial / backfill / traffic load — depth, backfill and surcharge notes if any
  • UL scope language (if any) — e.g. UL 1316 cite only; ask the producer for listing / certificate holder name
  • Documents / destination / QC — data sheet, drawing, ITP, shipping; destination and Incoterm; inspection evidence before release
  • Supplier path — how buyers qualify a producer (certificate scope, data sheet match); compare on frozen fields

FAQ

Is a fiberglass UST the same as a UL 1316 tank?

Not automatically. A fiberglass UST is a product description. UL 1316 is scope language often cited for underground fiberglass petroleum tanks. Naming UL 1316 on an RFQ does not prove a given shell is listed — ask the producer for the current listing or certificate holder name. Depth: what is UL 1316.

Single vs double wall — what must the RFQ say?

Name one wall type per comparable quote line. For double wall, also freeze interstitial monitoring language the end user requires. Leaving wall type open is a common reason quotes diverge on fiberglass underground storage tanks.

How does this differ from UL 142 aboveground steel tanks?

This page is about buried fiberglass / FRP UST RFQ fields. UL 142 typically sits with aboveground steel tank language — different product and document cluster. Soft-touch only: UL 142. Do not mix aboveground steel fields into a fiberglass underground RFQ.

What should I ask IFGS to confirm before award?

Ask IFGS to confirm the frozen RFQ fields and any UL scope cite against the factory data sheet, then compare quotes from licensed partner factories that can meet the stated scope. Contact sales or start with IFGS AI.
