Composite Pipe Selection Guide for Oil, Gas & Water RFQs

Composite Pipe Selection Guide for Oil, Gas & Water RFQs

When buyers search composite pipe for oil, gas, or water service, they need a duty-first selection map — pressure, temperature, and fluid — that points to GRE, GRP, RTP, or flexible composite language before quotes diverge.

IFGS is a sourcing and QC partner. We connect buyers to licensed partner factories in China and worldwide, clarify which composite pipe family the duty implies, confirm RFQ fields against factory data sheets, compare quotes and run or coordinate pre-shipment QC. IFGS does not own a factory and holds no API license; the license holder is the factory named on its certificate, verifiable on the API Composite List.

Composite pipe selection matrix (duty → family)

Search demand for composite pipe often blends several families. This page owns composite pipe selection by duty for oil, gas and water RFQs — not the non-metallic umbrella rewrite (non-metallic pipe oil & gas), and not a single-family buyers guide. Name one candidate family per comparable quote line, then follow the linked depth pages. Confirm OD, pressure and temperature on the factory data sheet — no invented IFGS catalog standards.

How to freeze the RFQ so quotes match

Quotes diverge when one bidder answers GRE stick line pipe and another answers GRP water pipe or spoolable RTP on the same line. Freeze these fields first:

  • Service — oil / gas, produced water, or water / municipal / industrial water (one duty per comparable line).
  • Candidate family — GRE/FRP epoxy thermoset, GRP polyester/vinyl ester, RTP thermoplastic, or flexible/spoolable (one per line).
  • Pressure / temperature / fluid — design pressure, test language, temperature and fluid as the project names them; confirm on the factory data sheet (no invented IFGS numbers).
  • Size basis — OD, ID or DN; confirm how the factory drawing labels it.
  • Joint / end / install — stick-joint family or spoolable end-fitting language; buried, above-ground or continuous as specified — never mix joint styles on one line.
  • Spec family (if any) — name the exact document. 15HR ≠ 15LR ≠ 15S ≠ 17J; water/municipal often differs. IFGS holds no API license; the license holder is whoever the factory certificate names.
  • Documents / destination / QC — factory data sheet, drawing, ITP / hydrotest plan, marking vs PO; destination, Incoterm and packing; inspection evidence before release (pre-shipment inspection checklist).

Common mix-ups

  • “Composite pipe” ≠ one product. GRE, GRP, RTP and flexible/spoolable are different families. Freeze duty and family before comparing prices.
  • Thermoset ≠ thermoplastic. Epoxy GRE/FRP stick pipe and thermoplastic RTP / flexible composite use different Spec language — see thermoplastic vs thermoset.
  • GRP ≠ GRE. GRP often points to polyester/vinyl ester water service; GRE usually means epoxy thermoset oilfield language. Naming: FRP vs GRP vs GRE.
  • Spec family must match the product family. Do not paste 15HR onto a 15S / 17J enquiry, or oilfield stick documents onto a municipal water RFQ. Confirm factory certificate scope. IFGS holds no API license.
  • Tubing ≠ line / process pipe. Oilfield tubing strings: composite tubing oilfield buyers guide.

RFQ checklist for composite pipe (oil / gas / water)

Copy into the enquiry:

  • Service / duty — oil / gas, produced water, or water / municipal / industrial water
  • Candidate family — GRE/FRP epoxy thermoset or GRP polyester/vinyl ester or RTP thermoplastic or flexible/spoolable (one per line)
  • Pressure / temp / fluid — design pressure, test language, temperature and fluid (confirm on factory data sheet)
  • Size basis — OD, ID or DN + factory drawing naming
  • Joint / end / install — stick-joint or spoolable end-fitting; install method
  • Spec family — if any (15HR ≠ 15LR ≠ 15S ≠ 17J; water/municipal often different); name the exact document
  • Documents — factory data sheet, drawing, ITP / hydrotest plan, marking vs PO
  • Destination — destination, Incoterm and packing
  • QC evidence — inspection report, dimensional checks, hydrotest records before release
  • Supplier path — how buyers qualify a producer (certificate scope, data sheet match); compare on duty + family + Spec match, not vague “composite” wording alone

How IFGS works on this order

IFGS clarifies which composite pipe family the duty implies — GRE/FRP epoxy thermoset, GRP polyester/vinyl ester, RTP thermoplastic, or flexible/spoolable. We confirm pressure/temperature, fluid, size, joint/end, Spec family (if any), documents and destination against the enquiry, compare quotes from licensed partner factories in China and worldwide whose certificate scope matches the named document, agree the ITP, and run or coordinate pre-shipment QC. IFGS does not run a lab or production line — the producer is the licensed partner factory on the certificate.

FAQ

Is composite pipe the same as GRE or FRP?

No. GRE and FRP epoxy thermoset line pipe are one family under the broader composite pipe search. GRP, RTP and flexible/spoolable composite are other families. Freeze duty and family before comparing prices; open the linked buyers guides for single-family depth.

When does water service point to GRP vs GRE?

Water / municipal / industrial water RFQs often point to GRP polyester or vinyl ester (and related FRP naming for water). Oilfield aqueous service may still name GRE / FRP epoxy when the end user specifies epoxy stick documents. Freeze the end-user resin and Spec language; confirm on the factory data sheet.

When does an RFQ need API 15S vs 17J vs 15HR/15LR language?

When the end user names a Spec. Stick thermoset oilfield RFQs often cite 15HR or 15LR (keep distinct). Spoolable / flexible RFQs may cite 15S or 17J — not interchangeable with each other or with 15HR/15LR. Water/municipal often uses different documents. Quote only against the named document and factory certificate scope. IFGS holds no API license.

What should I ask IFGS to confirm before award?

Ask IFGS to confirm duty, candidate family, pressure/temp/fluid, size, joint or end, Spec family (if any), documents, destination and QC evidence against the RFQ, then compare quotes from licensed partner factories whose certificate scope matches. Contact sales or start with IFGS AI.
