# What Is UL 58? Steel Underground Fuel Tank Standard for Buyers

UL 58 is a UL Standards document for steel underground tanks used to store flammable and combustible liquids. Oil & gas, retail fueling, and industrial buyers see it on drawings whenever steel USTs are in scope.
This guide summarizes what UL 58 covers at a high level, how it relates to nearby tank standards, and what FRP / GRE / RTP buyers should clarify. IFGS manufactures GRE, FRP, and RTP in Dongying, China. We do not operate a USA factory, and nothing here claims UL listing or certification for IFGS products.
UL 58 in one sentence
UL 58 sets construction requirements for horizontal, atmospheric-type, cylindrical steel tanks intended for underground storage of flammable and combustible liquids. Covered tanks are expected to be factory-fabricated, inspected, and leak-tested as complete vessels before shipment.
It is a steel-tank construction reference — not a catch-all “fuel tank” label for every material, and not a substitute for project specs, installation codes, or listing verification.
What UL 58 typically covers
Public UL scope language for UL 58 points to buyer-relevant boundaries:
- Form: steel; horizontal cylindrical; atmospheric-type; underground service.
- Configurations often discussed: single-wall; secondary-containment (double-wall); multi-compartment versions of those families.
- Factory completeness: fabricated, inspected, and leakage-tested before shipment as assembled vessels.
- Installation context: intended for use with applicable codes (commonly NFPA flammable/combustible liquids and related fire codes). Confirm edition and AHJ for your site.
- Boundaries not to blur:
– Not a stand-in for API 650 welded steel oil-storage tanks. – Not aimed at chemical / petrochemical plant tanks under other rules. – Does not cover factory-applied external corrosion-protection systems — that sits with UL 1746 for steel USTs.

Reading a scope is not a listing. Do not treat a blog mention, a photo, or a pasted mark as proof that a model is Listed or certified.
Why FRP / GRE buyers still see UL 58
Steel UST language still appears when you buy composites because yards mix materials, EPCs copy steel clauses into FRP RFQs, and corrosion / secondary-containment expectations differ by material. Confusing UL 58 (steel construction) with UL 1316 (FRP tanks) or UL 1746 (steel external corrosion systems) produces wrong quotes and slow approvals.
Start with liquid, burial vs aboveground, single vs double wall, monitoring, and required documents — then map to the right standard family.
UL 58 vs related standards (high level)
| Focus | UL 58 | Often confused with |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | Steel underground tanks for flammable/combustible liquids | — |
| Non-steel tanks | Not FRP construction | UL 1316 — FRP underground tanks |
| Steel corrosion systems | Outside UL 58 corrosion-system scope | UL 1746 — external corrosion protection for steel USTs |
| Large AG welded oil tanks | Not API 650 space | API 650 (separate) |
| Flexible composite line pipe | Not a tank standard | RTP guide · RTP product |
Takeaways: Want FRP tanks → do not paste UL 58 as the material clause. Need factory corrosion protection on steel → bring UL 1746 into the conversation. Need GRE/FRP/RTP pipe → separate pipe specs from tank standards early.

What UL 58 does not replace
- Standard text ≠ certificate. If listing is required, ask for the file/model/mark for the shipped unit.
- Factory geography. IFGS builds in Dongying, China — mentioning UL 58 in content does not imply a USA plant or a UL mark on IFGS goods.
- Installation and operations. Construction standards do not replace NFPA/IFC/local rules, backfill practice, or leak detection.
- Fake marks. Reject artwork that pastes UL logos onto unlisted products. Diagrams here use no certification marks.
Buyer checklist (tank + pipe RFQs)
- Steel or FRP vessel? FRP paths usually track UL 1316-type discussions, not UL 58.
- Underground or aboveground?
- Single wall, double wall, compartments, and monitoring?
- For steel: corrosion protection approach (often UL 1746 territory).
- Connected piping: GRE/FRP/RTP pressure, temperature, fluid, and applicable pipe standards.
- Documents: standard edition, material certs, factory leak-test records, install instructions, and listing evidence only when required.
FAQ
Is UL 58 the same as UL 1316? No. UL 58 is steel UST construction; UL 1316 addresses FRP underground tanks. See What Is UL 1316?.
Does UL 58 include coatings or jackets? Public scope indicates corrosion-protection systems are outside UL 58 and discussed under UL 1746.
Does “UL 58” on a datasheet mean Listed? Not by itself. Verify listing for the exact model if the project requires it.
Can GRE pipe or FRP tanks be “UL 58 tanks”? Generally no — wrong material family for UL 58’s steel focus.
Does IFGS make UL 58 steel tanks in the USA? No. IFGS is a Dongying, China GRE/FRP/RTP manufacturer. This article claims neither USA manufacturing nor UL listing.
Next step
Separate the tank standard path from the pipe path, then send IFGS fluid, pressure, temperature, length, and destination.
