GRE Tubing for Water Injection Wells: What to Check Before You Send an RFQ

Before requesting a GRE tubing quotation for a water injection well, define the service conditions and connection requirements. Diameter and pressure rating alone may not describe the complete tubular duty. A clear RFQ helps suppliers identify missing information before quoting.

Clarify whether the request concerns a well tubular string or a surface injection line.

Describe the well duty

State whether the tubing is intended for water injection, sewage reinjection, polymer injection or another service. Include the well arrangement and where the tubing will sit in the completion. Provide a well schematic or completion sketch when available.

Specify operating conditions

Separate normal operating conditions from design or maximum conditions. Include fluid composition, solids and treatment chemicals; normal and maximum pressure and temperature; pressure cycling and transient conditions; well depth; and available external pressure, axial or combined load information.

A single pressure number may not represent every condition in a well. Ask the supplier to review the operating envelope and explain the basis and limits of the offered rating.

Confirm size and connections

State nominal size and measurement basis. Include the required thread, coupling, interface designation and drawing. For an existing installation, provide mating component details instead of relying on a general phrase such as “standard thread.”

Identify the governing specification

If the tender specifies API 15HR or API 15LR, state the requirement and ask the supplier to identify the product scope and supporting documents. API describes Spec 15HR as high-pressure fiberglass line pipe and related components, and Spec 15LR as low-pressure fiberglass line pipe. Confirm that the cited scope matches the equipment and service. See the API publications catalog and API addenda and errata.

Reviewing GRE tubing datasheets, connection drawings and inspection records
Review the offer against project specifications and connection drawings.

Request supporting documents

Ask for a datasheet and dimensions, connection details or drawings, stated pressure and temperature limits, applicable standard and edition, plus inspection, test, traceability and handling documents required by the project. ASTM D2992 describes practices for establishing a pressure design basis for fiberglass pipe and fittings under selected environments; see ASTM D2992.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Compare service, fluid, temperature, pressure envelope, size basis, connection, standard scope, documentation and delivery. Clarify differences before comparing price.

Frequently asked questions

What information is most important in a GRE tubing RFQ?

Duty, fluid, operating envelope, well arrangement, size basis and connection requirements are the key starting points.

Is pressure rating enough to select GRE tubing?

No. Review pressure alongside application, temperature, fluid, connection and relevant well conditions. Ask the supplier to state the basis and limits of the offered rating.

Should I specify API 15HR or API 15LR?

Specify the standard required by the project and ask how it applies to the offered product. Verify that the scope matches the equipment and service.

Can I use a connection description without a drawing?

An exact designation or drawing is preferable when tubing must mate with existing wellhead or completion equipment.

What should I compare between supplier quotations?

Compare the same service conditions, size, connection, rating basis, documentation scope and delivery requirements.

Request a project-specific review

Share well duty, fluid, pressure and temperature envelope, required size, connection details and drawings for a project-specific datasheet and quotation. See the GRE Tubing product page.
