Water & Desalination GRP Pipe

Discuss intake, brine, cooling and water infrastructure requirements for a project-specific material review.

Desalination plants and large water-infrastructure schemes move huge volumes of seawater, brine, and process water through corrosive circuits. GRP pipe (and related GRE/FRP systems) is widely evaluated for intake, pretreatment transfer, brine reject, cooling water, and selected product-water lines when the project specification accepts glass-reinforced plastics. Dongying IFGS manufactures GRP/GRE/FRP line pipe and joints for water and desalination RFQs — focused on duty definition and document clarity, not on copying any competitor’s branded product families.

This page is the L3 hub for desalination / water infrastructure GRP. It is intentionally separate from oilfield produced-water and injection duties (different chemistry, different Spec conversations). For O&G injection, use Oil & Gas / produced-water materials when published. For marine shipboard seawater, see Marine FRP / GRE.

Application overview: desalination and water GRP

  • Seawater intake and intake screening transfer — large-diameter GRP often considered for corrosive seawater conveyance to the plant.
  • Pretreatment and filter backwash lines — chemically dosed seawater and wash water; state coagulants, antiscalants, and chlorine residual.
  • Brine / concentrate reject — elevated salinity return lines; verify temperature and any mixing with cooling water.
  • Cooling water circuits — once-through or recirculating seawater cooling associated with the power/desal island.
  • Selected permeate / product water lines — when non-metallic is approved; note potable or process quality requirements in the RFQ.
  • Utility water and chemical dosing headers — smaller GRE/FRP lines for acid, caustic, or antiscalant transfer when compatible.

IFGS works from Dongying as a manufacturer. Large-diameter municipal network claims outside our published product range are out of scope unless confirmed in review — we will not invent diameters or pressure classes on this page.

Operating conditions checklist (介质 / P·T / 口径 / 接头 / 标准)

  • Medium (介质) — seawater intake, brine, permeate, cooling water, chemical name and concentration.
  • Pressure & temperature (P·T) — design and operating; include transient pump starts and warm brine cases.
  • Size (口径) — DN/NPS and wall or pressure class language used in the tender.
  • Joint (接头) — lamination, bell & spigot, flange, adhesive; thrust restraint and burial details if underground.
  • Standards (标准) — project water GRP specification, AWWA/ISO/EN references if named by the buyer, or API Spec 15HR / 15LR only when the tender actually cites them for GRE line pipe. Spoolable API Spec 15S is a different family — do not put 15S on a rigid large-diameter intake GRP RFQ by habit.
  • Install — buried, above-ground on racks, submerged intake; traffic and soil loads.
  • Quantity / length and destination country.

Qualified inquiry: application + medium + two of P/T/size + length order-of-magnitude + country + company. Attach tender piping material section when possible.

Typical IFGS products

  • Low-pressure GRP line pipe — primary placeholder for water utility and many desal transfer duties.
  • Joint systems: bell & spigot, lamination, adhesive bonded, flanges for equipment nozzles.
  • Where high-pressure spoolable composite is truly required on associated energy corridors: API 15S RTP — only under a 15S buyer frame, not as a synonym for GRP intake pipe.
  • Storage: GRP tanks / station systems when the RFQ includes tanks (separate product family — tanks are not “API 15HR pipe”).

Why GRP vs steel for desalination water circuits

  • Seawater and brine corrosion — primary driver for non-metallic intake and reject lines.
  • Chemical dosing compatibility — resin selection against acids/oxidants used in pretreatment (fluid data required).
  • Weight and install — large-diameter GRP strings can reduce heavy-lift frequency versus steel — project-specific.
  • Internal smoothness — helps limit friction growth from corrosion products (do not claim a fixed kWh saving).

Steel or lined steel remains appropriate when the tender mandates it, when temperatures or pressures exceed composite envelopes you approve, or when mechanical abuse risk is extreme. IFGS will screen rather than oversell.

Intake, brine, and cooling — RFQ emphasis

Intake: diameter schedule, burial/submergence, surge from pump trips, and marine growth strategy. Photos of the corridor help — 现场图优先.

Brine: salinity, temperature after recovery devices, and whether brine mixes with cooling water before outfall.

Cooling: ΔT, velocity limits from the project hydraulic note, and any residual chlorine.

No fabricated plant names, capacities, or “X years leak-free” metrics appear here.

What we need for a technical review

  1. Plant type (SWRO, MED/MSF associated water, hybrid) and line service name.
  2. Water/brine analysis or chemical list.
  3. Design pressure, temperature, and surge notes.
  4. DN schedule and metres per line class.
  5. Joint and thrust-restraint expectations.
  6. Buyer specification names and destination country.
  7. Layout sketch or site photos when available.

Certifications boundary

Cite only live IFGS published marks: ISO 9001, API 15HR, API 15LR as applicable. No fake potable-water marks, UL logos, or competitor trademarks as IFGS brands.

CTA

Send desalination / water GRP data for review. Keep oilfield injection intents on their own URLs so desalination searches stay on this one-keyword page.

Separating desalination GRP from oilfield water injection

Search traffic often lumps “GRP water pipe,” “GRE injection,” and “desalination piping” together. They are different intents:

  • Desalination / water infrastructure GRP (this page) — seawater intake, brine, cooling, pretreatment, product water under water-project specifications.
  • Produced water & injection — oilfield saline water, H2S/CO2, injection pressures, often API Spec 15HR/15LR or 15S conversations tied to upstream buyers.

Keeping separate URLs protects RFQ quality. If your project is upstream injection, say so and we will route you to the correct hub and product family instead of forcing a desalination template onto an oilfield PO.

How EPC and owner RFQs should cite standards

Water tenders may reference ISO, EN, AWWA, or national GRP piping documents; upstream-influenced packages sometimes paste API Spec 15HR/15LR language into water scopes by habit. On the RFQ, paste the actual clause. IFGS will map manufacturing capability to the named document or propose an equivalent — we will not silently relabel a product family. Remember: API Spec 15S addresses spoolable reinforced plastic line pipe; it is not a synonym for large-diameter rigid intake GRP.

Published IFGS trust marks remain ISO 9001, API 15HR, and API 15LR. Additional marks required by a water tender (potable listings, country-specific certificates) must be asked explicitly; absence from the live site means “not claimed here.”

Burial, thrust, and hydraulic notes (concept-level)

Buried intake and brine lines need soil load, traffic, and thrust-restraint thinking at the project level. GRE/GRP systems use different restraint details than welded steel. Provide the civil trench typical detail or state “aboveground on sleepers.” Hydraulically, state design velocity targets from your process note rather than asking us to invent an optimal velocity. Transient pump trip surge should be flagged early — it often governs wall selection more than steady operating pressure.

RFQ package checklist for desalination EPCs

  1. Line list extract (tag, service, DN, material note, P, T).
  2. P&ID snapshots for the seawater and brine systems.
  3. Material specification section allowing GRP/GRE/FRP.
  4. Site country, Incoterm preference, and inspection witness expectations.
  5. Any preference for factory hydrotest documentation language.

With that package, IFGS can complete a technical review from Dongying and return a scoped quotation path. Without it, we will send one clarifying request listing 介质 / P·T / 口径 / 接头 / 标准 rather than guessing.
