Why Coalbed Methane Wells Need FRP / GRE Screen Pipe

Coalbed methane (CBM) wells move gas and water together and often carry fines. That duty is why buyers evaluate fiberglass / GRE / FRP screen pipe — perforated or slotted tubulars for downhole sand control and inflow — instead of treating every “fiberglass pipe” search as surface line pipe or spoolable RTP.

This page is the why / explainer. For a locked 2023 Mongolia supply-and-logistics case, see the companion project post (same publish wave). IFGS manufactures in Dongying, China.

What a fiberglass / GRE screen pipe is (and is not)

In buyer language, an FRP / GRE screen pipe (玻璃钢筛管) is a perforated or slotted tubular used downhole so formation fluids can enter while limiting sand and solids. It is:

If your tender mixes screen tube with surface RTP or stick GRE line pipe on one line item, split the RFQ — manufacturing, joints, and inspection packs differ.

When the conversation is GRE tubulars more broadly, buyers may cite API Spec 15HR / 15LR. That lettering is not a synonym for screen pipe, and it is never API 15S.

CBM well duty: gas + water + fines

CBM production typically couples gas desorption with formation water and mobile fines. Steel screens can be the right answer on many wells — and the wrong answer when:

  • Formation water / dissolved gases drive internal corrosion or frequent workovers.
  • String weight and handling limit what the rig or completion program can run.
  • The owner’s materials policy already prefers non-metallic downhole tubulars for the same corrosive service class.

None of that is a performance guarantee. Service varies by basin, coal seam, and completion design — send data, do not copy a blog rating.

Comparison of corroded steel well screen versus FRP/GRE fiberglass screen

Why FRP / GRE shows up on the shortlist

Honest engineering drivers (project-variable, not slogans):

  1. Corrosion resistance in water-rich, chemically active CBM fluids — when the resin system matches the medium.
  2. Lower weight versus steel for the same geometry class — logistics and running loads matter in remote pads.
  3. Continuous filament-wound construction for the tubular body — factory process photos show capability, not a certificate mark.
  4. Sand control + inflow area defined by perforation / slot pattern — which you must specify; IFGS will not invent a slot chart.

Cold-weather shipping photos (snow, crane, container) support a handling durability narrative. They do not prove an arctic rating or a factory in Mongolia.

RFQ fields board for fiberglass screen pipe: size, slot, P-T, fluid, joint, destination

What belongs on the RFQ

Minimum useful fields:

  1. Description: FRP / GRE screen pipe (perforated / slotted) — downhole CBM.
  2. Size / OD (or the designation your program uses).
  3. Slot / open-area language or drawing — write “TBD with completion eng” if unknown.
  4. Design pressure / temperature as project fields, not numbers copied from an article.
  5. Fluid: gas, water, salinity, any H₂S/CO₂ or solids notes you already have.
  6. Joint / connection preference if dictated.
  7. Length / joint count and destination (country / basin level is enough — no need for pad names in a public post).
  8. Documentation: ITP outline, third-party inspection, packing (export).

FAQ

Is FRP screen pipe the same as RTP? No. Screen pipe is a downhole perforated/slotted tubular conversation. RTP under API Spec 15S is typically spoolable surface composite line pipe.

Can you publish a slot chart here? No. Open area and slot pattern are project data. Attach a drawing or completion note.

Do you invent well counts or operator names? No. Public posts stay at country / year / duty level unless a controlled reference is approved.
